Hunt Beyond's Top Ten 2020 Bikepacking events

For most us the off season has well and truly arrived. Getting out on the bike requires military planning to ensure the correct layers are chosen to keep warm, the lights are charged and don’t even mention the post ride clean up!

So let get some motivation in the bank and explore some bikepacking goals for 2020. Here is Hunt Beyond’s top ten bikepacking events to enter in 2020.

Dylan and teammates preparing for a race

Dylan's CX Nat Trophy U16 Race Report

You may have seen Dylan on the road in the summer, but it's 'cross time now and he can be found at the National Trophy rounds all over the country, fighting shoulder to shoulder with the best young riders in the country. Here's his report of the U16 race of Round 2 at the Westmorland Showground.

"For someone who does cyclocross for enjoyment, fun and some mud, the National Trophy Round 2 was not my piece of cake. After taking a few sighting laps over the roller coaster course, I had decided firmly that my race objective was to survive and not break any bones."

Gosse celebrating with a fist in the air

Gosse: King of Scotland

What a race, what a trip. We headed up early on Saturday for the 8 hour drive to Glasgow, full of quiet optimism. The reason? We knew after his 2nd place at Milnthorpe a fortnight ago, Gosse had the bit between his teeth and had spent the two weeks training (really) hard for this. We had Dan of Breakaway Digital in tow for photography, as well as Matt of Mason Cycles (one of the finest mechanics in the game) - massive thanks to both of those guys for their time & serious morale-boosting abilities.

In a recent video on Gosse's life balancing studies & pro riding, made by Voxweb (University of Radbound's independent magazine/publication),  he signed off by saying he was "the happiest man in the world". We quoted him on this, challenging that around 2 hours before the race, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who would define Gosse as even remotely chirpy. True to form, within a few hours of the race start, the mood was a little off....

Gustav's bike and sleeping bag in a empty room

What you won't do for love... by Gustav Thuesen

What motivates someone to ride 1065 km from Copenhagen to Salzburg? Love. When my girlfriend had the opportunity to work in Salzburg for six months I knew I would come and visit her multiple times – and I had to do the +1000 km trip by bike from Copenhagen once.

I knew it would be long and I knew I wanted to do it fast. Just me, the bike, a sleeping bag and a mat. I had done a 1700 km bikepacking trip before from Copenhagen to Bergen but that was done over a leisurous 15 days. This time I wanted to do it in under 72 hours...

Search out Sunshine this winter: HUNT's guide to winter bike packing destinations

With Autumn drawing in and winter looming on the horizon (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) it’s time to day dream about summer! Or instead of just daydreaming you could bite the bullet and book a winter bike packing trip to try and find some warmer weather. But where should you go? Read on to find out some top destinations to go bike packing this winter.

South East Asia offers a variety of destinations for a backpacking trip. Cambodia, Vietnam, Lao and Thailand all offer unique cultures and experiences. Traffic can be a little hectic around bigger cities and on main roads, however they are used to slow moving mopeds and motorbikes so after a while you learn to become part of the flow of traffic.

Andrew Feather on the National Championship Hill Climb

Hill Climb National Championships 2019 Preview

With the National Championships looming, we thought it wise to check in on our favourite hill-climb mentalists to see how their seasons have been going, as well as their specific preparations for the big day itself on Sunday 27th October. Andy Feather comes in as both defending National Champion, and hot favourite, having set 6 course records on his way to 10 wins of a possible 12 so far this season.

It won't be a walk in the park, as he'll face hot competition from the likes of Dan Evans & Ed Laverack (course record holder). After taking the honours at Pea Royd Lane in 2018, we're also expecting to see Fiona Burnie head to Haytor to defend the womens' title against an ever-strengthening opposition.
Ryan Le Garrec riding to the Murr

Meeting Ryan Le Garrec

Ryan Le Garrec is a French Videographer who has been following the Ultra Cycling calendar for the past year. He has provided some of the amazing images and video that has appeared in the Hunt Beyond newsletter and social media so we took the time to sit down with Ryan and find out a bit more about the man behind the lens.

As a child I always wanted to put my eye to daddy’s big camera. Kids look up to firemen and policemen, but I looked up at the war reporter and the superhero of my childhood, my dad. He was literally dodging bullets and bombs to tell the world what’s going on and report about people suffering the evil side of the human race. That and the fact I found cameras super sexy sparked a very early interest for filming.

Rory Townsend sprinting his Canyon

True Grit: A Love Story

We're left with nothing but a sense of immense pride for Rory Townsend, not just for his ride on the day, but for his road leading up to Harrogate. Following a rocky 2018, he rode an immense season this year, with podium places in both the Classic Loire Atlantique & the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic in the Spring. Another few podium places came during a big block in Belgium in the mid-part of the season. Then a win at the final stage of this year's Tour Series in Brooklands preceded a 4th place at the Irish National Road Road Championships at the end of June. Then, of course, came his amazing ride at the Tour of Britain, which saw him take the Eisberg Sprints Jersey, just days before receiving the call-up for the World Championship squad.
Hunt Rider, Claire, walking her bike with the Italian Mountains in the backdrop

Riding the Turin - Nice Rally

Hunt open Dev rider Claire Frecknall has recently returned from the Turin - Nice Rally, a bike packing ride across the alps to the Mediterranean sea. Read on to find out how the ride went and to see some stunning images from the mountains...

The Torino-Nice Rally is a self supported bike-packing adventure criss crossing the French-Italian border for around 700km (with around 15,500m of climbing) between Turin and Nice. There’s tarmac, gravel and some tough hike-a-bike for those who choose it.

Rory Townsend celebrating Eisberg Intermediate Sprint Win

HUNT at the Tour of Britain 2019

Another Tour of Britain done, and another Eisberg Intermediate Sprints jersey in the bag. What an epic ride it was by Rory Townsend to fend off competition from both World Tour & Pro Conti riders, in a week that saw him put world class sprinters away (such as a Matteo Trentin).

We were lucky enough to be on the road for the duration of the race, and were once more reminded of the fact that Canyon dhb are nothing like other race teams...
