Dresden. The name evokes images of stunning baroque architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture. But beyond the city's famed landmarks, there's a thriving cycling scene just waiting to be explored. We recently had the pleasure of spending a day with Paul Müller, a well-known figure in Dresden's bike and running community, and an ambassador for HUNT Bike Wheels, to discover the hidden gems of his home turf.
Discovering Dresden: A Ride with Local Legend Paul Müller
Discovering Dresden:
A Ride With Local Legend
Paul Müller.
We started our journey at the Kawa, a local spot that is well-known to cycling folks, and from there, Paul led us through a diverse landscape. The route took us up the Helfenberger Grund, down the Borsberg, and finally, to the HUNT warehouse. As we cruised along the relevant cycle paths, it became clear that Dresden is a city that works on improving the infrastructure for cyclists. The streets are safe and well kept and have easy access to the outskirts of the city.
"Dresden offers incredible variety for cycling," Paul explained. "On Monday, you can ride the flatlands to the north. Tuesday, tackle the climbs along the Elbe hills. Wednesday, enjoy the Saxon Switzerland landscape. Thursday, hit the singletracks in the Heide forest with your MTB. Friday, a quick ride towards Meissen. Saturday, a long loop south towards the Erzgebirge and the Czech border. And Sunday, a relaxed gravel ride through the undergrowth and along the dirt roads around Dresden."
We had the chance to sit down with Paul and delve deeper into what makes Dresden so special for cycling.
Paul, you're a well-known face in the bike and running scene beyond Dresden. Can you briefly describe yourself in three sentences?
Hey, I’m Paul—36 years young, proud dad, and a longtime Dresden local. When I’m not working in the pharmaceutical industry, you’ll find me on two wheels, chasing adventure on road, gravel, and trails. Cycling isn’t just a sport for me; it’s a way of life, a source of balance, and a way to connect with an amazing community.
What makes Dresden a special place for you, especially for cycling?
Dresden is a paradise for cyclists! Whether you're craving fast road sections, punchy gravel tracks, or deep forest trails, the variety of routes is incredible. On top of that, the local bike community is strong—you always know someone who can recommend the best rides, help you out with gear, or simply join you for an unforgettable spin.
How did you get into cycling, and how long have you been riding?
It all started with a wild, DIY fixie build—a bright, colorful frame with a ridiculously narrow handlebar. From there, I dived into mountain biking, shredding the trails of the Dresdner Heide before switching to road cycling. That’s when the addiction really kicked in! Fixie racing pulled me into the competitive scene, and before I knew it, I was lining up for MTB marathons and road races. These days, I’ve left the serious racing ambitions behind and now ride for the pure joy of it—the perfect balance to life.
We all know a big ride makes you hungry - what are your top picks for refuelling in Dresden?
If you’re craving a burger, The Boy and the Burger is a must—always ask for the ‘Burger of the Month’! For something quick and delicious, Marmaris serves up a killer döner and great pizza. If you’re into Lebanese flavors, Alnibras won’t disappoint—you’ll leave happy and full. And for those who take their pizza seriously, Pizzastube is an absolute classic. Basically, there’s no shortage of good food in Dresden!
Besides your own riding, you're also involved with Kolibri Cycling. What activities do you organise, and where can people follow and ride with you?
At Kolibri Cycling, we’re all about sharing the stoke—whether it’s fast fixie crits, off-road gravel epics, or all-day MTB adventures. We organise group rides, hit up races, and create spaces for cyclists to push their limits and have fun. If you want to join the action, follow us on Instagram @kolibri.cycling for event updates. You can also check out @kolibri.bande to see where the crew is riding next.
As a dad to a young son, how do you juggle job, family, and training? Any tips for others in the same boat?
The key is to be realistic. I know I can’t commit to training for a 300km gravel race or a 100km trail run right now. It’s not just about finding time to train—it’s about having enough energy left to enjoy life with my son. That’s why I focus on structured planning, fitting workouts into available time slots without overloading myself. In the end, cycling is a passion, not a profession. Keeping that perspective makes all the difference!
What do you love about HUNT Wheels, and which wheelset is your favorite?
I’m a huge fan of the HUNT 32 Aerodynamicist UD Carbon Spoke Disc—they make my BMC feel like it’s flying. The rim depth gives me just the right balance of aero gains without being too much, and they’re light enough to climb effortlessly. Off-road, I trust the Proven Carbon Race XC wheels—they give me the confidence to hit rough trails without holding back. And I can’t wait to test the Limitless Gravel Aero wheels on my new gravel setup—it’s going to be a game-changer!
Dresden's Growing Cycling Scene
Paul's passion for cycling is infectious, and it's clear that Dresden's cycling community is a supportive and thriving one. The city's diverse terrain and well-connected network of routes make it a paradise for riders of all disciplines, from road cyclists to mountain bikers and gravel enthusiasts. In addition, Dresden has an increasing number of bike-related companies that have set up businesses in the region.
As our ride with Paul came to an end, we stopped by the HUNT warehouse and got a sense of the dedication and expertise that goes into creating high-performance bike wheels. It's clear that HUNT and Dresden are a perfect match, both committed to innovation, quality, and a passion for cycling.
