The Purpose.

The Purpose.

Modern XC courses are faster, rougher, and more technical than ever. Lightweight still matters on the climbs, but overly stiff wheels can make it harder to stay smooth and efficient when the trail breaks down.

The Proven Race XC Berd wheelset balances that. Our carbon rim platform, paired with Berd’s Dyneema® spokes keeps acceleration quick and direct, while reducing high-frequency trail feedback that traditional spokes transmit. The result is a smoother, more controlled ride as speeds increase.

Hand-built in our US workshop using the Trudi system, each wheel is tensioned for consistency where it matters most. Quick to accelerate, precisely on line, and composed over time.

Built for race pace but just as at home on any fast day on the bike.

Hookless/Straight Sidewall Design

Berd Spokes

  • Made from Dyneema®, a fibre that is 15x stronger than steel by weight.
  • Woven fabric means that it is naturally better at absorbing vibrations from the trail.
  • Weighing just 2.5g, nearly half the weight of the steel spoke. 

S_RapidEngage Hub

  • Crafted to remove unnecessary weight without compromising durability or performance.
  • A 3x2 system with double-tooth pawls engaging with a larger 90t drive ring to offer incredible 2° engagement angle for instant power transfer from the pedal to the track.

Technology.

Each wheelset is hand-built in-house using a Trudi electronic truing system, allowing precise and consistent spoke tension across Berd’s Dyneema® spokes. It’s a more involved process, but it gives us tighter control over how each wheel rides from the first pedal stroke. The system delivers rapid acceleration with a more forgiving ride feel than a typical ultra-light XC wheelset.

The rim is taken from our Proven Race XC wheelset, where low weight and impact resistance are balanced for modern cross-country riding. It is paired with the Proven Trail hub, which provides fast engagement and consistent performance under repeated load. 

The main difference comes from the use of Berd Dyneema® spokes. These spokes use a fibre construction rather than traditional steel, reducing system weight while maintaining a high strength-to-weight ratio. 

They also change how vibration is transmitted through the wheel. Compared to steel spokes, this results in a more damped response across repeated impacts and rough terrain.

CNC machined 6066-T6 heat-treated aluminium alloy hub body. 148x12mm boost design. H_CERAMIK freehub body reinforcement coating (Shimano/Sram HG body) provides excellent durability and protects against cassette sprocket damage to the freehub often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies. Updated S_RapidEngage 90T system.  2° engagement. Oversized 7075-T6 heat-treated aluminium axles. Center-lock disc mount. HUNT recommends a 2.4"-2.6" tire for best performance, tire widths between 1.9" and 2.8" are also safe to use.  Note: best performance is usually gained by using tire pressures lower than the maximum, you can see our blog post about this, read here.   Tubeless-ready for lower weight and rolling resistance. You must not exceed the maximum tire pressure limits set out in the table below or the maximum limit set by your tire manufacturer if this is lower.

Warranty.

A full 3 years from purchase date warranty is offered to the original purchaser only on all Hunt bike wheels against material or workmanship defects, please click here to read full details.  

Berd spokes will lose approximately 30% of their initial tension over the first six months but unlike metal spokes they maintain all of their strength regardless of tension and increasing the tension is not required. This is a normal process and a trained bicycle mechanic can bring the tension back up to 100 kgf if desired. Ref Berd Spokes 

Stated wheel weights: Our stated wheel weights reflect the wheelset only; without rim tape, tubeless valves or disc brake lock rings, as is industry standard. While a 3% variance (lower or higher) in total system weight is completely normal in manufacturing.

A max system weight of 297 lb (system weight – total weight of fully kitted up rider, bike and luggage). If a rider is over 275 lb then an experienced bike mechanic should check the wheel regularly.
