10,000km: Newfoundland to Florida

‘The Eastern Divide Trail had been on my radar for a while. At 10,000 km from Newfoundland to Florida, it’s the longest MTB route in the world, and the sheer scale of it was too tempting to ignore. After setting the record on the 8,000 km European Divide Trail in 2022, the itch for another big FKT just kept growing, and 2025 became the year to chase it’

Unlike its more Westerly cousin, The Tour Divide, which crosses the high mountains and desert areas of Colorado and New Mexico, the EDT follows the Eastern side of the USA which is characterised by a wetter and more humid climate.

‘One of the wildest moments came in Alabama when I hit the infamous peanut butter mud, so thick it clogs tyres and covers everything in inches of clay. Six hours of slogging only got me 10 miles, and by 11 pm I was trudging to a closed gas station in the pouring rain. Before I could rest, I had to get clean, which is how I ended up squatting in a puddle on the forecourt, scrubbing mud off myself in the dark.’

A New FKT

Despite the challenges and testing conditions for both body and bike Angus persisted and managed to build a 1 day buffer over the record by the halfway point which he managed to hold until the end.

‘Ultra racing isn’t glamorous, but after weeks of moments like that I finally made it to Key West in 39 days, 10 hours, and 22 minutes.’
